Tuta
End-to-end encrypted email based in Germany. Formerly Tutanota, rebranded to Tuta in late 2023. Full encryption of content and metadata.
Description
Tuta (formerly Tutanota) encrypts everything: email content, subject lines, attachments, and even your address book. Encryption is automatic between Tuta users and available via password for external recipients. The company is based in Hanover, Germany, under GDPR. The code is open source. The interface was fully redesigned after the rebrand. Free plan includes 1 GB of storage.
Strengths
- Own encryption protocol, independent from PGP
- Based in Germany, strong EU privacy laws
- Encrypted calendar included
- Affordable paid plans
Limitations
- No IMAP/SMTP support (must use Tutanota apps)
- Fewer integrations than Proton Mail
Recommended for
- Users wanting a European encrypted email alternative
- Budget-conscious users (cheaper than Proton Mail)
Compared to alternatives
The most affordable alternative to Proton Mail for encrypted email. Tuta goes further on encryption (including subject lines), but the ecosystem is narrower than Proton's.
