Element (Matrix)
Decentralized messaging on the Matrix protocol. Encrypted, self-hostable Discord/Slack.
Description
Element is the reference Matrix client for encrypted, decentralized messaging. In 2025, Element X is gradually replacing the classic app: a complete rewrite, faster, built on the Rust SDK. The legacy app remains available through late 2025, but Element X is now the recommended mobile app. Works with any Matrix server and is self-hostable.
Strengths
- Decentralized and federated (like email)
- Even the provider can't read your data
- Open source and self-hostable
- Bridges to Slack, Discord, etc.
Limitations
- Interface less polished than Signal
- Matrix ecosystem still young
- Complex server setup for self-hosting
Recommended for
- Communities and organizations
- Users wanting federation
- Self-hosting
Compared to alternatives
The most complete Matrix client. Element X finally brings the speed that was missing. Compared to Signal, decentralization is an advantage for organizations, but mainstream adoption remains harder.
